To troubleshoot any electrical problem in your home, you must first know how to locate your circuit breaker panel. Let’s see how you can find the circuit breaker while always making safety your top priority with any electrical issue.
What Is A Circuit Breaker?
Circuit breakers are responsible for regulating how much electricity is flowing to a specific power source, such as outlets or appliances. In the event a circuit is overloaded, it will simply shut itself off to prevent any serious electrical/safety issues.
Circuit breaker switches look like heavy-duty, sideways light switches. The switch will be securely in the “ON” position when the breaker is functioning properly. Whenever the breaker trips, the switch will be out of place toward the panel’s middle area.
Where Is A Circuit Breaker Located In A House?
The majority of residential electrical panels are placed in easily accessible areas of a home. However, they are typically installed outside of the main living space. The garage is the most common installation location. Homeowners will usually find it mounted on a side wall close to the main entry door.
If the circuit breaker is placed in a basement, the panel will likely be found on a wall in the utility area. It could also be close to the point where the main electrical service enters the structure.
Other common circuit breaker locations include a laundry room or utility room. Homes located in warmer areas may have the main panel mounted on an exterior wall. Today, electrical codes typically require that the panel be within six feet and seven inches of the floor. There must also be clear working space of at least three feet in front of the panel for ease of access.
How To Identify The Main Electrical Panel
The main electrical panel will be a tall, rectangular metal cabinet, securely fastened to a wall. If you are trying to distinguish this box from other small utility boxes, look for the heavy-gauge service wires that are entering the box. These will be noticeably thicker than standard wiring.
Inside the panel, you will notice a row or two of switches. These are the circuit breakers, typically rated for 15 or 20 amps for standard circuits. The main disconnect switch controls power to the whole house.
