If your fluorescent light bulbs go bad, it is possible that there is a problem with the fixture. Learn how to change these light bulbs by using our simple, DIY guide below.
Necessary Equipment
For this task, you will need the following tools and materials:
- 4-in-1 screwdriver.
- Wire stripper/cutter.
- Bulb socket.
- Replacement bulb.
Step 1. Pull The Light Bulb
- Unplug the light and twist the bulb 90 degrees using both hands.
- Pull one end straight down to loosen and ultimately free it from the socket.
- Lower the entire bulb at this time.
Step 2. Remove End Cover
- Unscrew the fixture end cover.
- Typically, double-bulb units will feature a screw on each side.
- Four-bulb units usually have an additional screw on the top center edge.
- Remove all screws and now pull off the cover.
Step 3. Remove Fluorescent Light Socket
- Expose the wiring by sliding out the fluorescent light socket.
- It’s crucial to keep the wiring order straight.
- Do this by cutting one side of the old socket wiring loose at a time.
- Strip the wiring back about 1/2 inch.
- Now press the bare wire ends into the terminal slots featured on the new socket.
- Terminal slots work like a barbed fishhook, as once the wire is pushed in, it cannot be pulled out.
- Repeat this process for the remaining wires.
- Next, replace the socket.
Step 4. Close It Up
- Push the stripped wire into the new terminal, ensuring to insert the correct wire into each terminal.
Conclusion
Fluorescent light fixtures are highly durable and virtually maintenance free, but the occasional service or repair may be needed at some point. The good news is replacement parts are quite easy to install and can be found at most hardware stores.
If your fixture is not lighting up at all, it may not be getting any power. Check the circuit breaker or fuse box, either resetting or replacing the needed equipment. The majority of fluorescent lights last many years, but when one starts flickering on and off, or turns black in color, you may need replacement light bulbs.
